A clear guide to the International English Language Testing System, one of the world's most recognized English exams.

The Basics

What is IELTS?

IELTS stands for the International English Language Testing System. It is one of the world's most widely recognized English proficiency tests, accepted by universities, employers, and immigration authorities in countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.

IELTS measures your ability to use English across four skills and comes in two versions: Academic (for university study) and General Training (for work and migration).

Who is IELTS for?

IELTS is for students planning to study abroad in English, professionals seeking international work, and anyone applying for a visa or residency in a country that requires proof of English ability.

How It Works

The IELTS Format

IELTS tests four skills. Listening, Reading, and Writing are completed on the same day; Speaking is a face-to-face interview.

Listening

Around 30 minutes of recordings with 40 questions, testing your understanding of spoken English.

Reading

60 minutes, 40 questions based on passages that differ for Academic and General Training.

Writing

Two tasks in 60 minutes, including an essay and a report or letter.

Speaking

An 11 to 14 minute face-to-face interview with an examiner.

How IELTS is Scored

IELTS uses a band scale from 0 to 9, in half-band increments. You receive a band for each of the four sections, and your overall band score is the average. Most universities ask for an overall band of 6.0 to 7.0, though requirements vary by institution and program.
