Development of English in the Philippines

English is an international language used in every schools and university in South American and Europe. Countries like the Philippines and India study English at an early age during their kindergarten years. Around 80 countries accept English an Official language. Those countries are the United States of America, Australia, United Kingdom, and South Africa etc. English in the Philippines occurred in the year 1762 when the Americans occupied the Philippines from 1898 to 1946. Thus, this is why English is an Official language in the country.

The Philippines is made up of around 70 Million people. While in 1901, around 504 US teachers came to the country. This is so-called the language of education and from local words, they merged vocabulary and modified grammar and pronunciation resulting to create Newspaper and Magazine in the country. English was implemented starting 1901 when the US occupied.

In 1935, English was added as an official language. Over the years it developed including its accent, vocabulary and even the way of writing.

The beginning of the English language was around 1898 to 1920. Including Jose Rizal, National hero of the Philippines learned English on his own and also encouraged his sister to learn too.

The way of learning was directly followed by proper grammar like the ones used in American schools. Filipino themselves taught English to one another. Between 1920 – 1941, Around 209 Filipino scholars were sent to get a college degree in various fields like Medicine, Law and Animal Science.

Having English proficiency is powerful which is considered a primary medium for commutation in this 20th Century. It plays various roles in all aspects in all demographic regions. This is a skill acquired to increase one’s professional growth, market, and career advancement.
