Learning English does not only happen at a desk. Some of the best progress comes from laughing with friends on a hike, ordering food at a market, or cheering during a game. Baguio makes this easy. The city is cool, green, and full of safe places to explore, which is why outdoor activities are such a big part of life for our ESL students here. In this post we share a few of our favorite moments, along with a short video you can watch below.

Sometimes a short clip says more than a long description. The video below gives you a quick look at what a day outside looks like for our students. Press play, then read on for the stories behind it.

Why Learning Outside the Classroom Works
There is a simple reason time outdoors helps so much. When students leave the classroom, they stop worrying about grammar rules and start using English to do real things, like asking for directions, planning a trip, or telling a joke. That is when the language finally feels useful instead of difficult. Trusted resources such as the British Council LearnEnglish library make the same point: real practice builds confidence faster than drills alone.
This is a big part of how we teach. Our ESL course mixes focused lessons with plenty of chances to speak in everyday situations, and our why choose A&J page explains how we turn those moments into steady progress. The outdoors simply gives students a friendly, low-pressure place to try.
Mornings at the Park and Around the City
One of our favorite spots is Burnham Park, right in the middle of the city. The wide lawns, the lake, and the bike paths make it a perfect place for a relaxed English morning. We often give students a simple task, like renting a boat or buying snacks, so they have to use real English with real people.
Mai, a student from Vietnam, told us she was too shy to speak during her first week. Then her class spent a morning at the park. By the end of it she had rented a swan boat, asked a vendor about the price of strawberries, and laughed her way through a tongue twister with a classmate. She said that morning was the first time English felt fun instead of scary. BBQ Nights, Camping, and Friendly Games
Not every adventure means leaving campus. Some of the warmest memories happen right outside the dorms. Our campus facilities include an open BBQ and camping zone, a gym, and courts for basketball and badminton, so there is always something happening after class.
Kenji, a quiet student from Japan, surprised everyone during a weekend BBQ. He volunteered to run the grill, which meant he had to take orders, ask about spice levels, and joke with hungry classmates for two hours straight. His teacher said his speaking jumped more in that one evening than in a week of lessons. Friendly games do the same thing. When you are calling for the ball or arguing about the score, you forget to be nervous and the English just comes out.
"I learned more English at the BBQ than I expected. I was just having fun with my friends, and the words started coming naturally."
Weekend Trips and Fresh Mountain Air
On weekends, the adventures get bigger. Students visit strawberry farms, walk through pine forests, and take trips to nearby viewpoints where the whole city spreads out below. The fresh mountain air is a nice change from study time, and every trip turns into a natural English lesson without anyone noticing.
On one farm visit, a group of students had to work together to find the right bus, read a simple map, and ask a farmer how to pick the ripest berries. Sofia, a student from Spain, said it felt like a real test of everything she had learned, except it did not feel like a test at all. Moments like these are why outdoor activities for ESL students in Baguio are more than just a break. They are part of the learning. How a Day Outdoors Builds Real English
It is easy to see these days as simple fun, but they do real work. Younger learners get the same benefit through our Junior Course, where games and activities are built right into the schedule. And behind every trip is a team that knows how to turn an ordinary afternoon into speaking practice, which you can read about on our faculty and staff page.
