Almost everyone who decides to study English in the Philippines ends up comparing the same two places. Cebu, on the coast, and Baguio, up in the mountains. The schools in both are doing broadly the same thing, so the choice is rarely about the classroom. It is about the weather, the trip to get there, and what you want your Saturdays to look like.
Our Bias, Stated Up Front
We are an English academy in Baguio, so you should read this knowing which side of the comparison we live on. That is exactly why we are not going to tell you Baguio wins. For a lot of students it does not, and sending someone somewhere they will be unhappy helps nobody.
What follows is the part that is actually different between the two, without the sales pitch.
If your picture of the Philippines has the sea in it, that is real information about what you want. Take it seriously.
The Real Differences
Climate Is the One That Surprises People
Baguio sits at around 1,500 meters, and that altitude changes the experience more than anything else on this page. It is cool enough that most classrooms and dorm rooms do not need air conditioning, and cool enough that arriving with only summer clothes is a mistake students make every intake.
Cebu is at sea level and tropical. If you love heat, that is a feature. If you are the kind of person who wilts in humidity and cannot concentrate, it is worth being honest with yourself before you book several months of it.
Getting There Is a Genuine Trade
Cebu has the easier journey. Mactan-Cebu International Airport takes direct flights from many cities across Asia, so for a lot of students it is one flight and you have arrived.
Baguio has no international airport. You fly into Manila or Clark and then travel north overland. It is a real extra leg, and pretending otherwise would be silly. What we would say is that it is a leg you do twice: once on the way in and once on the way out. Weigh it against the months in between rather than against the flight.
What Your Free Time Looks Like
This is the part worth thinking hardest about, because it is where you will spend every weekend for the length of your course.
In Cebu, the answer is the sea. Island hopping, diving, beaches within reach of the city. In Baguio, it is mountains, pine forest, trails, markets and a compact highland city. Neither is better. They are just different Saturdays, and you know which one you would actually enjoy.
What Does Not Change
The thing that draws students to the Philippines in the first place is the same in both cities: a timetable built around one-on-one lessons, which is unusual compared with the group-only classes common elsewhere. You will find that in Cebu and you will find it here.
Accreditation, permits and paperwork also work the same way nationally. Wherever you go, check that the school is properly accredited and that it handles your study permit for you. So How Do You Choose?
One question usually settles it. Picture yourself three weekends in. Are you on a boat, or are you walking somewhere green in a hoodie?
If it is the boat, go to Cebu with our blessing. If it is the hoodie, come and talk to us. And if you are still undecided, the useful next step is not more comparison, it is looking closely at a specific school: who teaches, what the campus is actually like, and what a stay includes.
